Biography of Janet Chu

An acting teacher once said, “The audience wants to be taken on a journey out of their own life.” This had become my mission as an actress with the characters I bring to life.

I was born in Chinatown, Los Angeles and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, California. At 11 years of age, I found myself fascinated with my family's hand-held camcorder. My sister and I filmed our own remakes of Terminator 2, The Little Mermaid, Cinderela, and other Disney movies. During this playtime, I stumbled upon my passion for acting. "We're going to start rolling, so stop laughing!" Acting gave me much joy and and provided a creative outlet for my life.

In 2002, I attended my first acting course at Pasadena College and landed a role in an educational short film, The Baby Inside of You. From 2004 to 2006, I was involved with theater at Pasdena College, East Los Angeles College, and toured with LAUSD's Storybook Theater. I also landed a series regular role in an educational video series, Putting English to Work. By 2007, I was involved with all aspects of film production: script development, set design, and storyboarding, and also produced and starred in my first short, Dumblings. I achieved roles which premired in independent film festivals: Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, and DisOrient Asian American Film Festival of Oregon. In 2008, I self-produced another short film, Shadow Hills, which premiered at Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Additionally, I played the lead in short film named Wah-Wah, which then became an international finalist at the Rainbird Inteligent Use of Water Film Competition. By 2010, I signed with Brogan Agency and Midwest Talent Management to represent and further my acting career.

Aside from acting, early 2004, I also began training in Wushu with James Ibrao, Grand Master of Chinese Martial Arts Association. I have trained both in unarmed Wushu, and Wushu weapon techniques. I now honor and appreciate Wushu's art form and its ability to strengthen the body, calm the mind, and apply the philosophies of Wushu into my acting.
